Thyme: Seventeen-year-old Thoroughbred gelding

Why is he not gaining weight?

He "knows" that fat horses founder and he is afraid because he's already had more than enough experience with sore feet (navicular). I explained that he didn't have to be that fat. Just gain enough to cover those bony ribs. He says he can do that.

[In a few months time his owner reported having to reduce his feed, as his weight was "perfection."]

Why is he more talkative lately?

"I'm more relaxed with my place in the herd now. Before I was unsure of my place and had to proceed with caution. Now that I can relax there is more time to chatter. Plus the herd has accepted me and will now listen to what I have to say. In the beginning they discounted pretty much anything I said."

Do you remember the saddle fitting we did with you a few years ago? Did it make you more comfortable?

"I remember. It was nice to have such a comfy fit. The pads were so comfortable and I could really enjoy rides instead of being cramped and squished. I really appreciated the time and effort they took to make sure I was comfortable. That made me feel special and important. I bragged about it to other horses I've met along the way. Most of them were incredulous that people would actually take the time to help them be comfortable. I did a lot of bragging about my good fortune. How could I ever forget that?!"
